Makar Sankranti, regarded as one of the oldest Hindu festival, is observed with tremendous pomp throughout India. Sankranti, which is celebrated in various ways around the nation, marks the sun's astrological arrival into the sign of Makara (Capricorn). The association with Uttaraayan goes back to the time of the Mahabharata legend when Bhishma Pitamah waited for the sun to set in Uttaraayan while lying down on a bed of arrows.
