Mauni Amavasya 2024: Know significance & benefits of holy bath in Ganga

Maghi, also known as Mauni Amavasya, is the first amavas in the month of Magh. Just like the name suggests, individuals observe one day of fasting on this day of silence, during which they refrain from speaking. "Mauna" literally means "keeping silent," but in a spiritual sense, it denotes a state of oneness with self. On this day, fasting is considered to help one obtain virtue from the divine. In addition, Ganga baths are considered to hold particular importance on this day. Taking holy dips in the Ganga during the month of Magh and on Mauni Amavasya is considered highly auspicious since it is believed that the river is inhabited by deities on this day.
